Route along the Niraj

Târgu Mureş – Călugăreni – Eremitu: fort Szakadát – Eremitu: Tompa hill or Chiheru de Jos: Pogor hill – Târgu Mureş

The recommended route follows the following track:

Târgu Mureş – Călugăreni (Roman auxiliary camp)

Distance: 37 km
Level difference: 240 m
Pavement: asphalt, gravel

Start on highway 13, which goes from Târgu Mureș to Sighișoara, then before leaving the town turn left to county road 135 in the direction of Livezeni. Pass through Ivănești, Sânișor, Lăureni, Șardu Nirajului and Tâmpa and continue on county road 135 until Miercurea Nirajului. In the centre of the settlement turn left to county road 135A, then trhough Valea arrive to Vărgata, where turn right to municipal road 27. On a 5km long gravel road pass through Grâușorul and Dămieni then arrive to Călurăreni. The Roman site can be found at the settlement’s exit towards Dămieni .

Călugăreni – Câmpu Cetăţii – Eremitu: fort Szakadát (Roman watchtower)

Distance: 12 km
Level difference: 140 m
Pavement: asphalt, gravel

Start from Călugăreni towards northeast until you reach the county road 153A, where turn right, and then continue through Mătrici and Eremitu on county road 153. From the locality sign from Eremitu up to nearly 2 km turn left, then arrive to Câmpu Cetății. From Câmpu Cetăţii continue by foot to the Roman watchtower at fort Szakadát. Experienced bikers in forest cycling may cover the track with a mountain bike. The section, which goes through the forest, follows the track of the hiking path. In some parts you will need to get off the bike and cross the river. The dirt road is frequently covered by fallen leaves therefore increased attention is needed to avoid larger holes.

Eremitu: Szakadát fort – Eremitu: Tompa hill or Chicheru de Jos: Pogor hill (Roman watchtowers)

Distance: 6 km
Level difference: 30 m
Pavement: asphalt, gravel

From Câmpu Cetăţii cycle back on county road 153 to Eremitu, then in the village turn right to the forest road leading to Orșova. From the junction approximately 3 km can be covered by bike, after this you can continue by foot. On this track two sites can be visited, which are located in two different directions from each other. For the hiking path to the Roman watchtower on the Pogor hill, and for the exact location of the watchtower on the Tompa hill more information is available here.

Leaving the asphalt road continue on a gradually ascending gravel road until on the hiking track map the road marked with red splits in two. Here, you can choose which watchtower you wish to visit. If, you choose the watchtower on the Pogor hill then, continue on the forest road until on the hiking track map the road turns to the left, into the forest. From here, even for experienced mountain bikers, we recommend taking the hiking path by foot. In case you wish to visit the watchtower on the Tompa hill turn to the right, where on the hiking track map the road marked with red splits in two, and follow that. The adventurous can cover the larger part of this road abundant with slopes with a mountain bike.

Eremitu: Tompa hill or Chicheru de Jos: Pogor hill – Târgu Mureş

Distance: 38 km
Level difference: 130 m
Pavement: asphalt, gravel

Go back to Eremitu, then on county road 153 turn right, continue on county road 153A, pass through Mătrici and Dămieni, and turn right in the direction of Isla. Continue through the Isla top, Călușer and Icland, and then arrive to Ernei where turn left to highway 15. After, approximately 10 km biking, through Sângeorgiu de Mureș arrive to Târgu Mureş.
